Midwifery-OverviewOverview

Dr Jill EdwardDr Katherine Zieman, and Dr Madeleine Portuondo view birth as a natural process that should be supported and revered and offer a high level of care with the least intervention possible while still protecting the well-being of the mother and baby.  Since we are with you throughout your pregnancy and at least the first 6 weeks after your baby is born, we form a very close relationship and you receive very personalized care, which makes birthing go much easier.  Labor discomfort is managed using relaxation, water (birth tub, bath, or shower), changes of position, nourishment, as well as emotional support and encouragement. Suggestions are made as necessary, although we generally believe that pregnant women instinctively know how best to birth their babies.

Patient interview

Many pregnant women choose to have their baby in the comfort of their own home or in a birth center.  Studies have shown that home births and water births are safe and effective for low risk pregnancies whether it is your first or tenth child.  Women choosing a home birth or a water birth tend to have far fewer interventions and complications during their labor, birth and immediate postpartum period.  This helps with easier healing, breastfeeding, and bonding with their new babies.  We will also leave your space as it was before arriving for your birth and make sure you are well fed and tucked into bed with your baby nursing happily before leaving your family on that special day.  Call to schedule a free 30 minute consult to see if our services are right for you.
