Midwifery FAQs

Who will come to my house?

IMGP1458-1

Your naturopathic midwife will bring one to two assistants with her when she arrives at your house for labor.  You will have had many opportunities to meet the assistants during your prenatal visits.  Shortly before the baby is delivered, the second naturopathic midwife will arrive to help with the delivery.  Everyone will stay until mother and baby are nursing well and tucked into bed.

What do you bring with you to the birth?

We bring herbs and homeopathic remedies with us to help make labor smooth.  We also bring a hand held Doppler to listen to the baby’s heart beat during labor as well as oxygen and a full array of resuscitation equipment. If you need stitches, we bring sterile equipment and pain medication.  We bring IV equipment in case you become dehydrated during labor or need to have antibiotics during labor.

What happens at the prenatal visits?

The first two appointments typically last 1.5 hours as we go over your medical history and do a complete physical exam.  The rest of the prenatal visits last approximately 1 hour in length, with one visit at near the end of your pregnancy done in your home.  At each visit we will answer any questions that you have and ask you many questions about how you and the baby are doing.   We will treat any symptoms of pregnancy like leg cramps and nausea that you are experiencing with diet, lifestyle, homeopathy, and herbs whenever possible, and will only prescribe pharmaceuticals when necessary.  But most of all, we get to know you and you get to know us, which will make the labor go smoother.

What does your training entail?

IMGP1491-1

As naturopathic doctors, we have attended 4 years of medical school at the National College of Natural Medicine.  This entails 2 year of training in basic science and diagnostic skills.  The last 2 years refine those diagnostic skills and are intensive in treatments, both natural and pharmaceutical.  Our training also involves IV therapy and minor surgery.

As midwives, we have 2 years of classes in natural childbirth that are taught at National College of Natural Medicine.  We also shadow doctors in the office and at home births.

We also have current neonatal resuscitation and CPR certifications that must be renewed every 2 years.

Do you do water births?

Home water birth with our midwife

Being in the water is very relaxing for many laboring mothers.  You are welcome to a water birth and even catch your own baby if you like. Many women labor in the water even if they don’t end up delivering in the water.

Will my insurance cover a home birth?

Many insurance plans do cover a home birth or births in a birthing center.  Please call us with your insurance information and we will be happy to check your benefits and help guide you through this confusing maze.  For example, the Oregon Health Plan will cover a home birth by a naturopathic midwife when you have an open card.
